Why I love Debian

It’s a stupid question if somebody ask me why I love Debian. I am a Debian “addict” user since I touched Debian in 2004. I never change to other distribution  anymore.The reason why:

1. Stability

Debian has slowly release cycle because of heavy stability testing. The packages status will be changed to stable  version if they pass all criteria for stable version. Debian Developers (DD) never burdened when the release of Debian should be announced. Other distributions will announce their latest release every six months periodically. But Debian, we can’t guess when the latest release will be announced by Debian Team. I witness  if we upgrade Debian to the next stable version will run smoothly without problem. This server already upgraded from etch to Lenny and all services are working correctly. But please noted that Debian is not suitable for Desktop user, so “if you are a desktop user, please don’t use Debian. Debian is more suitable for server” and “don’t use Debian if you want to get a newer version of program”, Use Ubuntu or other distributions.

2. Strictly  Free Software

Debian obeys very strictly Free software philosophies. For example, Mozilla Firefox will never found in Debian, Debian Developers have been developing Mozilla Firefox source code and give namely with Iceweasel. Artwork of Firefox doesn’t fulfill of Free Software.

3. Still no Idea

Upgrade wordpress or not?

My blog engine maybe already out of date or expire. I have been using WordPress engine to built this blog since two years ago. Today, the latest stable version of wordpress is 3.0.  Since my stable version 2.7 that has been implementing on the server,  my blog engine never updated so I will ignore the stable version before 3.0. From version 2.7, it will be upgraded directly to version 3.0. All software  including wordpress should be upgraded to get a new feature or to cover existing bugs.

I will try to upgrade it with traditional way due to it’s simply way than others.


My Plan this Weekend – Continue to fix the program bugs

In this weekend, I plan to continue my Camba2Ldap program which has not reached a final stage for a good software that can be used for crucial purposes. My program link is here. Picture below is Camel ( Perl’s symbolic).


Also wants to add a feature namely “display a time slot which has not defined(discarded)” in my PCM Parser program (Link) and it can be downloaded (text mode) in here. There are two reasons why these time slots have to discarded (used for Gb and for signaling) . But until right now, I still confuse how to realize this purpose (  I haven’t been finding the algorithm yet). Does anybody can help me?.

This program is very important for me and already used to reduce error during implementation and of course for saving time in project. I have to relocate all Base station controller (BSC) and Radio Network Controller (RNC) from one MSC-S to other MSC-S. then that MSC-S must be powered off and installed at shelter then powered on again and move all BSCs and RNCs like the condition previously. Without my PCM Parser, I can’t imagine how to settle my work at Padang area.

Buku Debian GNU/Linux

Alhamdulillah buku berikutnya tentang Debian GNU/Linux sementara dalam proses penerbitan oleh Informatika Bandung. Cukup panjang saya mempersiapkan buku tersebut yakni dari tahun 2004 dan tentu saja isinya terus di-update sesuai dengan perkembangan Debian GNU/Linux. Buku tersebut saya tulis saat masih kuliah tingkat akhir di kampus dulu namun baru selesai di tahun ini 2010.

Buku tersebut terdiri dari 21 bab dengan rincian: Pendahuluan, Instalasi Debian GNU/Linux, Instalasi paket software, Sistem file GNU/Linux, Linux shell, Konsep dasar jaringan, server berbasis GNU/Linux (DNS server, Web server, FTP server, E-mail server, OpenLDAP, Samba server, web proxy caching dengan squid, DHCP server, Nagios, bacula), koneksi Internet, Membangun blog dengan WordPress/Joomla/Drupal, Pemrosesan kata, Manajemen group, user dan hak akses, kompilasi kernel, K desktop environment, sekuriti dasar Debian GNU/Linux, Repository Lokal Debian GNU/Linux, Sistem Boot, Stream dan Sed, Pengolahan grafik dengan command line, partisi hardisk, Editor Linux, Tex/LaTeX. Total keseluruhan halaman 548.
